A novice climber who fell roughly 1,500 vertical feet on Mt. Shasta was rescued Sunday afternoon in a dramatic response that underscores ongoing safety concerns on the mountain’s most popular route.

U.S. Forest Service Rangers rescued a woman over the weekend who was climbing Mt. Shasta in California and fell over 1,500 feet in the snow.

The woman had a suspected fractured right ankle and other injuries expected from a significant fall, but was “alert” and “in good spirits,” the agency said.
