A FIRST Robotics Competition district qualifier took place in Mason this weekend, with teams competing to advance to the state level competition.

"It's a friendly competition, or it tries to be," an official said of the two-day event hosted by the nonprofit FIRST.

If they fall short, only a limited number of students — or none at all — may make the trip.

As enrollment drops amid sinking science comprehension, FIRST adds that it still aims to inspire students by showcasing future opportunities that science can provide.
