In 1856 Anton Bruckner entered a competition for the position of organist at Linz Cathedral. His extraordinary improvisational abilities marked him as the obvious choice and he remained as organist in Linz for the next 12 years. In 1869, the year after he left Linz to teach music theory at the Vienna Conservatory, Bruckner wrote Locus Iste for the dedication of the votive chapel at Linz Cathedral.
