2021 has been a record year for cetacean strandings around the Irish coastline. Although many of these individuals are already dead, so all we can do is collect data and document them, we are very fortunate to have a team of trained first responders around the island of Ireland ready to help if any dolphins live strand. Our Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme- UK strandings team yesterday carried out a necropsy on the whale which was found dead in the Thames last Friday. Sei whales are rarely found stranded in the UK, with only 7 found in the last 30 years. We found no evidence of significant injury or plastics having been ingested.
