We are still trying to unravel a little mystery surrounding the most distinctive looking wolf (at present) in the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem—or at least, we think he is the most distinctive wolf currently but check out this montage to see if you agree. Wolf Y1T is the dominant male of the new Blood Moon Pack, which took over the Moonshadow Pack territory this past winter when the Blood Moon Pack was 4 wolves strong. But we aren’t really sure how this came to be. Before Y1T settled down in this

Big takeaway from our newly-published research: wolves hunting and catching fish is almost certainly a widespread behavior in places similar to the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem. That means wolves are very likely ‘fishing' in places like Wisconsin, Michigan, Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba and beyond each and every year! We first learned of wolves hunting fish (spawning suckers) in 2017 when two wolves in the Bowman Bay Pack ‘fished’. We thought that was pretty neat and seemed like a very unique behavio

This video gives a rare glimpse into the "fishy" proclivities of wolves in our area. The video was taken in spring just a short distance from a creek wolves have fished at for many years. This past spring was the 10th year we have documented wolves hunting and catching fish—a behavior that had not been documented in boreal systems such as ours until our work, in part, because it is a tough behavior to observe. What is particularly fascinating is that this wolf was not only carrying a fish but ca

Wolves didn't touch the rivers—but they changed them. By altering elk behavior, wolves allowed vegetation to grow back. Willows returned. Beavers came back. Rivers stabilized. This is called a trophic cascade, and it's one of the most famous examples of ecosystem restoration. The 2026 study says the effect was smaller than claimed, but the basic science still holds. Nature is connected. 🐺🌊 #TrophicCascade #WolvesChangeRivers #YellowstoneEcosystem #WolfScience #EcosystemRestoration How wolves c
